Snow Day

Russia x Reader

"Snow day!" You screamed happily as you opened up the door to the outside world.

Oh yes, your school was out for the day. When you had woken up that morning, you looked out of a frost-stained window to see blankets upon blankets of pure white snow – easily a foot high, just like the news had predicted the night before. After that sight, you just had a feeling that no school in your area would be open, since the road would hopefully be undeniably iced-over and unsafe to drive on.

So, right after you walked out of your room you sat yourself directly in front of the television, switching from your favorite cartoon channel to the news. You were anxiously waiting for your school's name to appear at the bottom of the screen. A half hour and many school's names flashed before – finally – yours had came up! Yes! No school!

And now, after getting yourself bundled up in a coat, scarf, and boots, and quickly checking in with your mom, telling her you had no school and was "gonna go play", you were outside, ready to go to the park, where kids always went when it was a snow day.

It was much chillier than you thought it was, and little puffs of air were coming from your mouth when you breathed. Your boots crunched against the previously unperturbed snow, sinking into it if you didn't immediately take another step, and leaving indents. The park wasn't far away from your house, but it took you a few minutes longer to trek there with the snowy obstacle course. Soon enough you were walking the covered pathway that led into the popular park, taking in the image of it all.

There were at least thirty kids at the far end of the park, all engaged in a heated battle, where all of the bullets were made of packed-together snow. All of the kids were hiding behind hastily-built white fortresses or chucking snowballs at their enemies. A true battlefield!

You spotted one of your friends from school – Eliza – and ran over to the side of the field she was on, dodging a snowball before you were behind the safety of one of the forts.

"Hey, ______!" She greeted as you crouched down beside her. She peeked over the barrier, then threw a nice-sized snowball, crouching once more, smirking. "Got her. Oh, by the way, we're playing "Capture the Flag"! If you get hit with a snowball, you're out, have to sit down where you get hit. Don't get caught on their side, though, they can take you to jail!"

You repositioned your scarf a tiny bit so you could talk clearly. "Oh, fun! I'll make sure to not get caught." You were always good at "Capture the Flag" since you were pretty fast at running. "Do you think I should go for the flag?"

Eliza smiled, a mischievous look in her eye. "Yeah, let's do it! I'll be decoy."

"Thanks," you said, grinning. "I'll be right behind you, then!"

The two of you positioned on either side of the small fort, getting ready to sprint out into the open.

"And... go!" Eliza said, quickly hustling. You waited a second before you then went, following in her tracks. "_-______," she said, still running, "I think we both might actually make i– " Eliza had spoken too soon as she got hit in the side of the head with a fast-flying snowball, falling to the ground.

"Eliza!" You called out in shock, stopping in your tracks before you ran over her. "A-are you okay?"

Her eyes cracked open, just enough so she could see you. "______... go, you must capture the flag," she said melodramatically, "for our team... for me... I'm not gonna make it... hurry, please!" With an overly-dramatic final shudder, she stilled.

"I will, I promise!" You had to stifle a small giggle – she had acting skills that were hilarious to watch and interact with.

Before you could get hit like your friend, you scampered off again, determined to go behind enemy lines and retrieve the flag. The flag! You could now see it in your sights, and that motivated you to run even quicker over to the item.

"Hey, she's stealing our flag!" Right when you touched said object, you felt multiple balls of snow hit the back of your body, and a few shouts of victory over the new prisoner – you.

You sighed in defeat, turning around, flag-less. You were so close! So, so close! It had almost been in your grasp. A small group of people – two boys, one girl, only the boys you recognized, – came over to you, smirking. "Hello, enemy! How does it feel to be captured by the awesome us? I mean, you were so close to getting that flag. Too bad for you I have an awesome aim," one of the shorter ones gloated.

"Gilbert, please just shut it and lead me to the prison already, thank you very much." The other two – the girl with the scary face and Berwald, both of which looked very intimidating – put one of their hands on both of your shoulders, leading you away from the flag, away from victory. Gilbert trailed behind, laughing.

A minute later, you were standing a few yards away from a tall, lopsided igloo.

"This is your jail cell. And just to make sure nobody comes to break you out, we have an awesome-but-not-as-awesome-as-me guard. Ivan, come out of there!"

A boy that looked to be around your age, but slightly taller, stepped out of the makeshift igloo, smiling. "Yes? Do we have another prisoner?" You looked him up and down – at his long, tan coat that covered most of his body, at the worn-out pink scarf that was wrapped tight around his neck – and you realized that you had never seen him before.

"Yeah, she's a quick one, would've gotten our flag if it wasn't for the awesome me! Make sure she can't get out, okay?"

The boy Gilbert called "Ivan" nodded, the smile still on his face. "Okay, comrade~"

Then Gilbert turned to you. "When we win the game, you can be released. See ya!" At that, the holds on your shoulders disappeared, and you felt Gilbert give you a slight shove so that you stumbled into the igloo, giving a small yelp of surprise as you fell on the icy-cold floor, landing on your hands and knees.

You stayed like that for a moment before you turned around, bringing your legs up to your chest, trying to protect yourself from the cold. It was only a moment later that you noticed Ivan was staring at you from the entrance of the igloo, a small pout on his face.

"Um, yes?" You said slowly, attempting to blow some warmth on your bare hands. They were getting really cold, almost to the point of being numb.

"That wasn't very nice of them to shove you in there like that." You noticed he had some kind of accent – what was that? It sounded cool.

You shrugged at his statement. "Well, it was Gilbert. He's still in that stage where if he likes a girl, he acts mean to them, I guess."

You both chuckled at that. Ivan came over to you from the doorway and sat down as well, just a foot or two away from you.

"So, what's your name?" He asked innocently, a small grin on his face.

"______. And you're Ivan?"

He nodded. "Da."

"... Huh?" You asked, tilting your head slightly.

He giggled, a cute little laugh. "It means "yes" in Russian, my native tongue. I used to live there, in Russia, before my family and I moved here, which was just a week ago."

Oh, well that explained the accent, and why you had never seen him before! "Oh, well that's cool. Do you like it here so far?" You rubbed your hands together, creating friction.

Your new friend nodded. "Yeah. … Um, are you cold? You keep rubbing and blowing on your hands."

You smiled slightly, nodding your head. "Yeah. But it's okay, I can just put them in my scarf– " You reached up to unwrap your scarf around your neck when you found that it wasn't there anymore! "Oh my God, my scarf!"

Now it was Ivan's turn to tilt his head in confusion. "Scarf?"

You nodded vigorously. "I had a scarf, but it must have came loose and fell off when I was running!" You started to tear up, sniffling. That was the scarf that your grandma had made for you when you were a baby! You had worn it for as long as you could remember.

You were pulled from your thoughts when you saw a scarf appear in front of your face. Eyes following the hands gripping it, you saw that it was being held out to you. You looked up at Ivan, still sniffling, and saw that he was actually handing it to you. "Here," he said simply.

"B-but... that's yours. I can't take your scarf."

He smiled and shook his head, his hair bouncing gently. "Nyet, it's okay. I want you to have it."

You timidly reached out for it, feeling it's velvety touch. Ivan nodded once more, closing your hand around the scarf with his gloved hand.

You stared down at it, rubbing little circles into it with your thumb. And then you started tearing up again.

"Why are you crying?" Ivan asked, the cute little pout claiming his face again.

You shook your head, doing your best to grin through the tears. "I-it's just so sweet," you answered. "Thank you."

Before you knew what was happening, you suddenly felt someone embracing you. "You're so sweet, ______. I haven't even known you before today, but I can tell. I can tell we're going to be best friends."

You laughed, tears of joy still flowing down your cheeks. "Yeah. I can tell that, too, Ivan. I can tell that, too."
